Anton Benzon | 1944–2024

Anton Benzon was a highly regarded South African landscape artist whose richly textured paintings are instantly recognisable for their colour, atmosphere and expressive handling of paint.

Working predominantly in oils, Benzon became known for his confident use of the palette knife and impasto, creating landscapes with remarkable depth, movement and tactile quality. Mountain valleys, blue gums, rivers, farm scenes and the countryside of Southern Africa were recurring subjects, interpreted with a strong sense of light and place rather than strict realism.

Born in Johannesburg in 1944, Benzon came from an important artistic lineage. His father was the celebrated South African painter and sculptor Johan Oldert, while renowned Eastern Cape artist Titta Fasciotti later became a close friend, mentor and significant influence on his development. Over time, Benzon established a style that was distinctly his own.

His work combines technical confidence with broad visual appeal. Bold colour, strong composition and generous paint application give his paintings presence from a distance, while closer viewing reveals layers of texture and assured mark-making.

Over a long career, Benzon built a loyal following among South African collectors, with his work exhibited through galleries and represented in private collections both locally and internationally. His paintings also continue to appear on the South African secondary art market.

Following his passing in 2024, Anton Benzon’s work forms part of an enduring South African landscape tradition. For collectors, his paintings offer a compelling combination of artistic pedigree, recognisable style and lasting decorative and historical appeal.
