Michael Heyns | 1946–2025

Michael Heyns was a South African artist of remarkable sensitivity, known for work that combines technical precision with a quiet, contemplative beauty.

Born in the Potchefstroom district in 1946, Heyns studied Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria and was recognised early in his career with the New Signatures Award. After a period working in film and animation, he committed himself fully to painting in the late 1970s.

His work is especially admired for the way it moves between realism, symbolism and abstraction. Botanical subjects became an important part of his visual language, with flowers, seedpods, pomegranates and organic forms appearing repeatedly. In Heyns’ hands, these were never simply decorative objects; they became symbols of transience, renewal, fragility and the rhythms of life.

A fascination with Japanese aesthetics, balance and negative space contributed to the refined simplicity of many of his compositions, while his interest in music can be sensed in the rhythm and movement of his more abstract work.

Over several decades, Heyns built a respected career through exhibitions and inclusion in private and corporate collections. His paintings continue to attract collectors for their combination of craftsmanship, elegance and emotional depth.

The Art Collective is proud to offer a selection of original works by Michael Heyns.
