Gian Piero Garizio

Gian-Piero Garizio | 1931–

Gian-Piero Garizio is an Italian-born South African painter whose work has become closely associated with the colour, warmth and atmosphere of the South African landscape.

Born in Brusnengo, Northern Italy, in 1931, Garizio moved to South Africa in 1953. Painting had occupied him from an early age, and after settling in his adopted country he developed a distinctive body of work centred on the places and subjects around him.

Working predominantly in oil, Garizio is best known for his impressionistic landscapes, Cape Dutch homesteads, street scenes, fishing boats, beaches and floral studies. His paintings are characterised by bold colour, assured brushwork and a wonderful sensitivity to light and atmosphere, often giving familiar South African scenes a sense of warmth and timelessness.

A particularly appealing quality in Garizio’s work is the balance between observation and interpretation. His paintings are recognisable and accessible, yet never overly literal; mood, colour and the emotional impression of a place are allowed to lead the composition.

Over the decades, his work has become widely known in South Africa, entering numerous private collections and maintaining a consistent presence in galleries and on the secondary market. Strauss & Co records an established auction history for Garizio, with works continuing to sell in recent years.
