Titta Fasciotti

Titta Fasciotti | 1927–1993

Titta Fasciotti was an Italian-born South African painter whose work is admired for its expressive colour, strong draughtsmanship and deeply felt response to the people and landscapes of Southern Africa.

Born in Bergamo in 1927, Fasciotti received formal training at the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti before making South Africa his home. His European grounding gave him a solid technical foundation, while his years in South Africa shaped the subjects and visual character for which he became best known.

Fasciotti painted across a broad range of genres, including landscapes, seascapes and figurative work. His depictions of rural life and Xhosa women are particularly recognisable, combining careful observation with a loose, painterly quality that gives the work warmth and immediacy. His compositions are often marked by confident colour, rhythmic brushwork and a strong sense of atmosphere.

During the 1950s he worked closely with respected landscape painter W.G. Wiles, an association that contributed to the development of his mature style. Over the following decades, Fasciotti built a substantial exhibition history and an established collector following.

Today, his paintings remain actively traded on the South African secondary market and are valued for their combination of technical pedigree, distinctive subject matter and enduring visual appeal.
