Duggie du Toit | 1943–2018

Duggie du Toit was a South African painter best known for his richly observed still lifes, portraits and figure studies, rendered with a distinctive combination of realism and classical impressionism.

Born in Johannesburg in 1943, Du Toit began painting while working in the mining industry before studying through the Famous Artists School in Connecticut, USA. He later committed himself fully to painting, developing a recognisable style built around warm, earthy colour, strong draughtsmanship and a sophisticated use of light and shadow.

Working predominantly in oil, Du Toit found beauty in everyday subjects — fruit, vegetables, old bottles, musical instruments and domestic objects — often arranging them in dramatic compositions with a wonderful sense of depth and atmosphere. His figurative work and occasional landscapes reveal the same careful observation and confident handling of paint.

His paintings were exhibited and sold through South African galleries and attracted buyers both locally and internationally. Today, his work continues to appear regularly on the secondary market, with auction records confirming sustained collector interest.
