Dale Elliot | 1946–2021
Dale Elliot was a prolific South African painter whose landscapes and seascapes are admired for their warmth, luminosity and unmistakable sense of place. Working primarily in oil and watercolour, he developed an accessible, impressionistic style characterised by confident brushwork, atmospheric light and a strong appreciation for the varied landscapes of South Africa.
Born in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape in 1946, Elliot began painting and exhibiting from an early age. Interestingly, art was not initially his profession: after completing BA (Law) and LLB degrees at Stellenbosch University, he practised as an attorney and conveyancer for ten years before leaving the family legal practice in the early 1980s to paint professionally.
The wide-open grasslands of the Eastern Cape strongly influenced his early “sunscapes”, while a later move to Knysna and the Garden Route brought coastal scenes, lagoons and Cape landscapes increasingly into his work. Over his career, Elliot produced thousands of paintings and exhibited widely throughout South Africa.
His work entered numerous prominent public, corporate and private collections, including those of the SABC, Sasol, Distell, SAB and Sun International. He was also an Associate of the Watercolour Society of South Africa and became an influential teacher, conducting popular painting workshops and producing instructional material for aspiring artists.
Today, his paintings remain active on the secondary market, reflecting continuing collector interest in his distinctive South African landscapes.
