Raymond Andrews | 1948–

Raymond Andrews is a South African artist whose work stands apart for its imaginative fusion of African symbolism, human experience and richly decorative form.

Born in East London in 1948, Andrews developed his artistic foundation through contact with several influential figures in South African art. He studied under Jack Lugg, later worked with Cecil Skotnes, assisted sculptor Ernest Ullmann, and spent time in the orbit of Walter Battiss at UNISA. These varied influences helped shape an artist equally comfortable with painting, printmaking, carving and graphic processes.

Andrews is particularly associated with his distinctive incised and painted wooden panels. Figures, animals, symbols and patterned surfaces are woven together into complex compositions that often feel part narrative, part mythology. His work can be playful, spiritual and reflective at once, inviting the viewer to interpret rather than simply observe.

A strong sense of rhythm runs through his compositions, with repeated forms and simplified silhouettes giving the work an almost sculptural presence. African visual references are central, but they are filtered through Andrews’ own highly personal and inventive language.

His work has been exhibited in South Africa and abroad and is held in a range of private and public collections.
