Mel Brigg

Mel Brigg | 1950–

Mel Brigg is a South African-born artist whose paintings are recognised for their atmosphere, emotional depth and expressive use of colour and light.

Born in 1950, Brigg developed as a largely self-taught painter and began working professionally in the late 1970s. His career later took him beyond South Africa, and after relocating to Australia in the early 1990s he continued to build an international reputation.

Brigg’s work moves easily between landscape, portraiture, figurative painting and still life, yet a strong sense of mood runs through all of it. His landscapes in particular are often expansive and contemplative, with loose, confident brushwork and softened detail creating a feeling of distance, memory and atmosphere.

While visually accessible, his paintings are not purely decorative. Themes of human fragility, movement, displacement and resilience appear throughout his work, giving many pieces a reflective quality beneath their surface beauty.

Over the course of his career, Brigg has exhibited widely and his work has entered public, corporate and private collections in South Africa and abroad. His paintings also remain active on the secondary market, reflecting sustained collector interest.
