Roy Taylor

South African 1919-2000 (Record auction price R13000 in 2022)

Lovely little work from this landscape master, 30x23cm, oil on board, unframed.

Roy Taylor was a South African painter best known for his evocative seascapes and coastal landscapes, particularly scenes inspired by the rugged shorelines of the Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Born in Queenstown in 1919, Taylor began painting seriously during the 1950s and went on to devote himself to art full-time. Over the following decades he developed a highly recognisable approach to landscape painting, working predominantly in oils and capturing the changing character of Southern Africa’s coastline with confidence and sensitivity.

Taylor’s paintings are characterised by strong composition, atmospheric skies, dramatic rock formations and energetic seas. His handling of paint gives his work a sense of movement and immediacy, while his understanding of light and distance creates convincing depth. Although particularly celebrated for his marine subjects, his body of work also includes inland landscapes and rural scenes.

Locations such as Morgan Bay, the Transkei coast, Natal, Knysna and the Cape coastline feature repeatedly in his work, creating a fascinating painted record of some of South Africa’s most beautiful coastal environments.

Today, Roy Taylor remains well represented on the South African secondary art market. His paintings continue to appear through established auction houses including Strauss & Co, reflecting sustained collector interest in his work more than two decades after his death in 2000.

For collectors, Taylor’s work offers an appealing combination of South African heritage, accomplished technique and timeless decorative quality.

The Art Collective is proud to offer a selection of original works by Roy Taylor.
